It would be logical to start at the beginning -but the beginning of what? Well it could be the beginning of my new life as a self-employed academic wondering what will happen next. Or it could be the beginning of my life... seeking some logic to the wanderings of over ?? years.
Is life logical?
No.
It has maybe some flow and some stops and starts... but where next? We were once given advice by a college principal to go back to when we 'knew' we were 'right' in the decisions made. So there may be an epistemological need to investigate where and when decisions were made so we 'know on what we stand'. The Greek derivation of the term literally implies the question 'on what do I stand'. What foundation do I have? What values might I have?
So to go back to when I was certain of anything of my own decisions might be a good place to start. I guess, no, I know that I knew that I knew that God knew what he wanted for me. Ah you say- introducing God to the equation. Even more illogical? Well, no, it seems far more logical to go with someone who is the Creator of all things than to leave him out. Dyer logic.
So how do we 'know' that? Truth is illusive to many a western thinker. Truth is dangerous. Truth may have to be covered up in False News... but not me; I blunder on in stating what I think is truth and end up in trouble. It spoils relationships to tell the truth about the person. There are 'ways and means' of saying difficult things apparently. So I shut up or blunder. One lecturer I had wrote his memoirs as 'Signs and Blunders'; it was a wonder it didn't get him into trouble apparently. It didn't. We laughed.
So knowing truth is where I've ended up so far. Fortunately I am not a philosopher. In fact I am a historian- that means being an investigative journalist into what did happen, how when and where -and WHY - from a variety of facets. All put together and one may find a many-faceted jewel shining out in the light -though not all facets can be seen at one go - unless turned around as one gazes. That is to come back to a way of seeing truth as singular. But it is not just a concept. It has to be more. It is according to biblical scriptural truth a person: Jesus Christ who said 'I am the way the truth and the life.' [John 14:6]. Yes you have me! I am a follower of Jesus Christ.
More in the next episode on discovering 'truth'- if I can work out how this blog works.
